Today in Italy was the Festa della Repubblica, or the Festival of the Republic, a day similar to our 4th of July! The day commemorates the institutional referendum held by universal suffrage in 1946, in which the Italian people were called to the polls to decide on the form of government, following WWII and the fall of Fascism. The only semi-celebration I saw was a ceremony going on near the train station we caught a glimpse of on our way to catch our train. When we saw it I didn’t understand what it was, but when I realized it was June 2, it all made sense! There were military personnel and police officers everywhere! I wish we would have had time to stop and watch for a bit.
